Automatization of production processes

Automation of the steel rolling mill.

The automation of the production line for hot rolling has been one of our largest and most demanding projects in Tornio, Finland.

The mechanical reconstruction of the steel works was performed under the supervision of our partner – SMS Siemag. Within the framework of this ambitious enterprise, we were responsible for designing and providing a significant part of the automation systems.

The aim was to increase the annual production of coils of high grade stainless steel from 0.7 million to 2 million tons, with a simultaneous increase in quality.

Such an ambitious enterprise set adequately high requirements for the automation systems. The entire median automation level (technological models, control of devices and visualisation) was reconfigured.

The new automation system has direct control over the production process and delivers information on the technological process data, production progress, product quality, material consumption, etc. Almost complete automation of the production process was achieved, as a result of which it is necessary to obtain an individual decision of the operator on the continuation of production only in exceptional situations.

After completing a preparatory process of almost two years, the system was implemented with record-breaking speed, during the polar night of 2004/2005. All of the desired objectives were fully accomplished. “OKTOSTECK” proves our competence in regard to industrial automation in a convincing way.

Moreover, the successful completion of this project demonstrates that Macrix is able to meet the requirements of so called “mission critical” types of project, where the perfectly coordinated cooperation of each individual member of a large project team is of vital importance.

The trust of our client derives from the success of the “OKTOSTECK” project, and has contributed to deepening our cooperation. The increasing number of projects being completed together speaks for itself.
